Suzuka's POV

They have been together forever.

Their love story began when they first met as students of Horikoshi Gakuen. Of course, Ryosuke and Mirai already knew each other since they worked together in Tantei Gakuen Q. So Yuto, being Ryosuke's best friend, was introduced.

Yuto and Mirai became fast friends. I always saw them together, studying and doing prefect duties. They were compatible to each other. Both were popular, both were responsible and both were very kind.

In our second year, Yuto confessed. And Mirai said yes. They had been inseparable since then and they did everything together- eating, studying and attending parties.

Both their families loved them, they shared mutual friends and eventually they received a project together. And their love team was warmly received by their fans. These led to more projects together.

Every single component of their lives revolved around each other. We were sure they would inevitably get married someday.

Everything could not be more perfect.

Yuto loved Mirai so much. He took care of her so well. He was always there for her. He prioritizes her more than his work or studies.

Whenever Mirai was sick, Yuto was always there to nurse her back to health. When Mirai was in a pinch, Yuto was there to save the day.

He would also say his dreams to her. Of being able to touch people by his performance, of finally being able to tell the world he loved Mirai, of building a family with Mirai and of growing old with her.

He was a prince every girl wishes for. A prince I wished for. But I knew I lost to my best friend.

Yuto have everything planned.

Mirai wanted to be married at 24 so he was planning on proposing right after Mirai's 23rd birthday.

He asked us, their group of friends for help. And of course all of us gladly do so.

He wanted to propose in Horikoshi Gakuen's rooftop, where he confessed. So together with Ryosuke, Yuri, Umika, Shougo, Jingi, Saaya, Nozomi and of course Yuto, we decorated the school's rooftop.

Halfway through our preparations, Yuto went to fetch Mirai from her shooting like he always does.

We heard Yuto's car return just as we finished the last details.

We hid at our respective places ready to let out the fireflies once Mirai said yes. I was by the fire exit.

Mirai and Yuto arrived. I saw them talking and then Yuto kneeled down and took out the red box.

Everything was perfect. Everything was going as planned.

Except for one thing.

Mirai didn't say yes.

Yuto couldn't believe it. He asked her why.

I knew all of us hidden there must be feeling the same. This was a very private matter but I couldn't help but hear what they were talking about.

"I'm so sorry Yuto. But I'm not ready... I... I don't think this can work out. I need some space. I'm sorry." Mirai said as she ran back down.

I ran after her. I knew she was hurting, too. I knew she loves Yuto still.

I caught her just as she was exiting the gates.

"Mirai!" I called.

"Suzuka..." She respond, surprised seeing me there. There were tear tracks on her face.

I hugged her. And she broke down.

She told me everything. It seems all of Yuto's nagging and excessive planning took a toll on Mirai. She grew weary of Yuto always stepping in to fix things for her.

They broke up. Yuto didn't want to, but Mirai was insistent. She said she wanted to grow, she wanted to be independent.

They didn't meet after that. But I knew it was hard for them to completely move on when their families and friends were constant reminders of the promises and dreams they had made during their happier days.

I tried to support both of them. But Mirai became distant to us. She left for America and continued her career there.

Yuto changed. He became unenthusiastic about his work and he became reckless and irresponsible.

Ryosuke and I tried to help him as much as we can but there came a time when even Ryosuke gave up on him.

I didn't, though.

I knew he needed help to find himself once again. I knew he was hurting. I knew he needed someone. And maybe, just maybe, I could be that someone.

We grew closer. He became dependent on me.

And then the Yuto I knew was coming back. Slowly, he moved on and discovered that there was life after Mirai.

One Saturday evening, after his work, he called me and asked to meet up. Since this has been regularity for us, I agreed.

I didn’t expect it but that night, he confessed.

“I didn’t realize it, but I’ve fallen for you, Suzuka. At first I thought I was just thankful for everything you did for me. I am, but I know now that it’s more than gratitude. I love you, Suzuka.”

I was speechless. I didn’t know how to respond. Truly, I love him. That feeling never went away. But...

“What about Mirai?” I asked.

He smiled at me. “I moved on.” He said simply.

“Before I was very hurt and I felt like I could never forgive her but now I feel different. I know she would be forever special to me, but I don’t love her anymore. It’s you I love now.”

We began dating. We were happy.

Only spending time sitting and talking was enough. He was always there, but it was different from how he was with Mirai.

We would talk about everything. We were really comfortable with each other. There were no secrets between us. But then that’s only because we read each other so well.

Yuto was everything I ever wanted. And I wanted to be his everything, too.

But then, Mirai came back to Japan.

She called me that day she returned. She asked if we could hang out once again.

I agreed. I missed her so much. But inside I felt guilty. Of course she still didn’t know about me and Yuto.

We met at our favorite coffee shop. She was still the same, very cheerful, very kind, and very beautiful.

She confessed that she began to find life alone harder than she imagined. She said she never realized that she depended on Yuto so much.

I didn’t know how, but I knew I should tell her

...and so I did

She didn’t respond at once.

But then she smiled.

“I’m not angry or anything, Suzuka. This was my choice. This is what I wanted. And you’ve always loved him, I knew. But you gave way for me. I’m sorry I was selfish.”

I hugged her then.

But that was the last time she invited me out.

For Shida Mirai’s come back, I heard that she would be doing a movie.

It was a shock to find out that Yuto would be her leading man.

I trust Yuto, and I trust Mirai. But I couldn’t help but worry. I watched how they were together. I knew how much they must have loved each other.

“If you want, I can reject the offer.” Yuto said one night. He knew I was worried.

“No, it’s okay. I think you guys need this, too. So you can have a closure.” I said. I knew this was right, but my heart was shouting to take my words back.

Yuto invited me to go to their set whenever I can. I know he knew I was still worried.

Their filming started. It was such an irony, but the set for the film was Horikoshi Gakuen. They would both be acting as teachers.

Those first days, Yuto said they were awkward with each other. I knew. I could see them looking everywhere but at each other.

But as time goes, Yuto confessed they’ve warmed up to each other somehow. It did seem like we three were back in Horikoshi, and I was watching my best friend fall for my love.

On that last day of shooting, I somehow felt different. I didn’t know why but I felt anxious.

Then, I realized that I couldn’t see Yuto or Mirai anywhere. I tried to calm myself. They wouldn’t... would they?

I searched for them, asking if anyone have seen either of them. One of the staffs said he saw them enter the building. I knew at once where they must be.

I went up the stairs. They must be on the rooftop.

I opened the door of the fire exit leading to the rooftop cautiously and I saw them. It was nostalgic seeing them from this view just like two years ago.

“Yuto...” I heard Mirai said.

“I... I miss you after all.” She said, and my heart beats faster. “I want to get back together after all.”

Yuto didn’t respond at once.

“I... I missed you, too, Mirai.” He finally said and I wanted to cry. I wanted to go. But I was frozen.

“But I’m sorry. I don’t love you anymore. I love only Suzuka.” My tears fell. I didn’t know if I heard right but I couldn’t stop my tears.

I was surprised when Mirai laughed.

“That’s good then.” She said.

“I lied. I’ve moved on, Yuto. I’m sorry if I didn’t trust you, but I just have to know that you are serious with Suzuka.”

Yuto stayed silent.

“The ‘I miss you’ part was true. But I don’t love you like that anymore. I’ve taken you and Suzuka for granted, I regret that, but because of that, I grew and Yuto and Suzuka, too.” Mirai said.

Yuto smiled at her.

“I’m glad I accepted this project.” He said.

“Me too.” Mirai said. “But what are you waiting for, Yuto? Go to Suzuka now!”

Yuto smiled one last time at her, and then he dashes back down.

And then I saw Mirai drop on her knees.

She cried.

She lied.

She hasn’t moved on.

She had to try and ask.

But it seems it's her turn to give way to her best friend and her love.

"Missing you isn't the hard part, knowing I once had you is what breaks my heart."

END.
