How's that for irony?

In which I actually talk about something besides my stupid personal life for a change.

A couple weeks ago, I watched Heroes with mlyn, and griped a lot about how poorly they use dramatic irony on the show, particularly with regard to Mohinder, who is quite possibly one of the prettiest men on the planet but who is also, as they're writing it right ( Read more... )

You have more patience with Mohinder than I do. I lost it when he refused to go back to Isaac's studio with Peter. To have a character give up so much and travel so far and then refuse to take just one more subway ride to find out something that would validate the risks both he and his father took is just d-u-m dumb. As you pointed out, they obviously know how to handle dramatic irony in regards to HRG and Hiro so here's hoping they give Mohinder the same chance. And yes, he is incredibly pretty.

I'm not a huge fan of Heroes, partly for the reasons you described. Using Dex as a juxtaposition is a really good example - because while the audience knew this very pivotal fact about Dexter, it wasn't distracting us; we weren't waiting, impatiently, for every other character to wise up. And the tables were then turned effectively - we learned something that Dex didn't know, but I still didn't find myself irritated until he discovered the truth about Rudy.

For me, dramatic irony is so tough to manage because it can leave the viewers fractured - on the one hand, we're gamely attempting to follow the storyline; on the other, we just want everyone to be on the same page, already. After a while, it's no fun waiting for the other shoe to drop. I guess what I'm saying is, to me it comes stamped with an expiration date. The longer you keep it around, the more it starts to smell.

Yay!

I think you should tag this as a usage post, too. It's use of irony!
