I don't get the hate about 'selfies'. Self-portraits have been around for ages. Just because it's suddenly a popular thing to do, people hate it just as suddenly. Sure, most are badly lit, badly composed and badly filtered, but the same can be said about most pictures on Instagram and Facebook in general.
Heck, on one of the online photography groups I'm a part of, one person had her family hating a very beautiful portrait she'd done for a friend, which in turn made her doubt herself and her ability as a photographer, because they said it 'looked like a selfie'.
My theory is that it's all about the misogyny. When it was mostly male artists and photographers doing self portraits, it's high art. When teenage girls do it, it's proof of shallowness and vanity and therefore wrong. It's yet another way to shame girls for taking control of the image they present and expressing agency.
