I can't make it make sense in my brain that anyone wouldn't admire Michelle Obama. She is strong, smart, beautiful and using her life to make her world a better place. I just don't get it. How is she in any way unlikeable. She is a lady in every sense of the word and is a magnificent representation of American womanhood to the world. I don't get it. I am baffled.

You have to be really, really racist, I think.

Which is another thing I am baffled by, so it all comes together, doesn't it?

When I was teaching, we added a book to the 6th grade curriculum about segregation. In it, they filled the swimming pool with cement rather than let black people swim in it. The first year we did it, class after class of children stared at me baffled. There was always a very long silence before the first tentative hand went up. They couldn't grasp that kind of racism. They would say things like, "Why would they fill it in! No one could use it then!" or "This isn't true is it? It doesn't make any sense." How could I explain something to them so irrational I as an Xer couldn't understand it.

My hope is one day this will all be as baffling to people as the swimming pool was to those kids I was teaching.
