I think that's a nice extra reason for not going the Arthur/Merlin route and it's nice if some see Gwen as a role model for women of her race. I always wonder if these things are bigger in the US than here though. The UK media doesn't really seem to go for the idea of positive discrimination.
For example, there was a big debate about the fact that a lot of the black guest characters on Supernatural die. Lots of Americans saying that should set a better example and make role models, a lot of Brits going 'but 90% of the guest stars die!'.
