Hey, smart people

I'm looking for a book about the periodic table, or more generally about the elements. I want it to list all the elements (so far) in order by atomic number, with pretty pictures of and nifty facts about each one, and information about how it's used, why it's cool, and so on. I don't know of such a book off the top of my head (though I might know some folks who do), but the periodic table table guy (very coooool project) has a nifty deck of cards that might fill this niche.

I did a search for Periodic Table under "Books" on Amazon.com and got a lot of promising ones. "A Guide to the Elements" by Albert Stwertka looks like a particularly good one. If you're signed into Amazon, you can do quite a lot of peeking inside of it to see if it's what you had in mind.

For everything up to about 1974, I recommend "Building Blocks of the Universe" by Isaac Asimov, and the book "Matter" by Ralph Lapp from the Time Life Science Library. Considering we haven't visually seen any of the elements discovered after 1974, you'll have to come up with info on those on your own. I learned a good portion of the chemistry I knew before Soles' class from those books.
