I remember a moment on the Cosby Show where Mom Cosby explains to one of the kids that "you're rich if your money works for you, instead of you working for your money."
I struggle with this A LOT. We have so many experiences that 'mean' rich to most Americans -- I have three kids who have been to more countries in their short lives than my mother went to before she retired. They think nothing of spending a week in an apartment in Rome, or swimming with the rays in Cayman, or jumping on a cruise for a school break. They have NO IDEA how totally privileged they are, and don't really understand why their parents are alternately amused and horrified by that. Personally, I will almost certainly retire at 55 unless I decide that I want to work longer-term because I enjoy it. We're actively planning to take a 3-6 month unpaid sabbatical in the next 5 years to travel outside of work commitments, once P is old enough

I feel your pain! I've lived within walking distance of the Atlantic Ocean. I've lived where I could see the Pacific Ocean (well, technically the Monterey Bay) out of my bedroom window. I see the Persian Gulf every day. I have a maid. I do not have to bust my ass.
But, you know, I do envy those people who can plant, like, a berry bush and see it yield some fruit before they move away, you know? My lifestyle just feels a bit more ephemeral than I'd like.
" If I'm rich I'm not supposed to bill clients who have less than me. If I am rich I should support people who are poor - for example, let tenants not pay rent. There's a huge iceberg of antipathy towards the rich that runs deep deep deep. It has something to do with envy, which is an unpleasant emotion to feel and unpleasant to engender in someone else

"You haven't noticed the same blame-someone-else-for-your-misfortune streak in Republican populism too?"
In regards to the rich/producers? Which is what we are talking about? No. Absolutely not. Provide an example.
And don't do the whole "moving-the-goal-posts-thing". It's unbecoming and tiresome. And duh, we all know grievances have been nurtured and used by politicians for centuries.

"Yes, and the Democrat party has been stoking this resentment and profiting off this hostile mindset for decades."
Some rich people fit the stereotype that some Democrats push. Some poor people fit the stereotype that some Republicans push. That's the thing about stereotypes - a few people fit them. Demagogues and populists then capitalize on stereotypes to lead their large and willing populations of highly suggestible sheep to the abattoir.
