Cleaning people for the cottage

As hard as it is to go up to Maine and clean the cottage between turnovers, I don't really mind it very much.  I listen to podcasts on my drive up and back, and get to "play house" with my lovely vacation home by the sea.  I often get a chance to go sit at the seaside for half an hour or so, too.  Yes, I have to work like a dog for four or five ( Read more... )

And knowing how careful you are about vetting people, I'm betting the couple you chose is among the best of what's available so you really are stuck. How frustrating.

I'm sorry your lovely spot comes with this particular drawback.

I think the problem is that I'm Martha Fucking Stewart. Look at that bouquet. That's my standard. I designed the flower beds for a cutting garden, bought the plants, planted them, tended them, picked the flowers, arranged them into the bouquet, and cleaned up after doing the arrangement (which includes composting the scraps). I set the bar too high. Our landscaping involves weed-wacking, mowing, weeding flower beds and sometimes edging and mulching. We're just too much. I'm too much.

But I'm charging top dollar, I have only 5 star (out of 5) ratings, and I'm proud of my product. I don't know how to dial it back.

You don't have to be Martha ****ing anything to know to vacuum up the sand, tighten down doorknob, or move lawn chairs to mow a small lawn. I realize you've gone over and above, but your help is under and below. You basically got yet still more members of the "work is what you want to do" crowd when their skill and delivery don't warrant that attitude. They're everywhere.

Those cleaning people sound awful - what a shame it didn't work out. Glad you were able to fix everything up for the next tenants. What pretty flowers!

Oh man, that's unbelievable (and perfectly believable) about the couple you hired. I just don't understand not doing something to the best of your ability. I'm sorry it all landed back in your and B's laps. That well and truly stinks.
