There's a scene in "Gone with the Wind" where Scarlett O'Hara is harvesting turnips to eat and sort of loses it, proclaiming that she'll "lie, cheat or kill" to avoid being hungry enough to eat turnips again

Boo on the gophers. I know you aren't a fan of cats, but I had one that would catch gophers and leave them on the neighbors welcome mats. He was well loved in the neighborhood.
Yay on all the jobs you completed! That's fabulous!
I never saw gophers until we moved here, and they are *thick*. I've resorted to container planting only, because they ate a bushy mint plant, all my pansies, two (non-small) tomato plants, and nearly killed the banana tree.
There are owls but apparently they're not enough to manage the population. The property manager needs to release a dozen or so gopher snakes into the holes.
:) I haven't grown my own things yet, but I love hearing about them. Food made of food sounds yummy. :) (I really enjoyed the food Mom would send when she was growing.)
(I will forage from time to time. Tried to ttoday, but neither the dandelion greens nor fiddleheads had come up. :( Next week!)
I'm so glad you're able to have some down time & get back to a less crazy life. Here's hoping that next year won't be so god-awful around tax time (at least in terms of having competent staff that show up to work).
I was *so* proud of myself for planting asparagus my first year here, and for awhile I had an AMAZING bed of asparagus. And then it started disappearing. Holes here too. Wonder if any of it is coming up this year? I'm not gardening this year, so if it's gone, it's gone. :(
Nope! I have discovered that in the presence of a small human my garden gets bumped way to the bottom of the list, which means I buy a bunch of plants and put them in the ground and then they all die while I feel guilty and stressed out about the waste. So this year I am sheet mulching all the veggie beds and letting them rest, and if I get super motivated I will clean up some of the perennials. Or not. I will do a small kitchen garden of herbs in the spiral, because that is not stressful and I love my fresh herbs. But our farmers' market has become so wonderful in the time that I've been here that I don't feel the need to grow my own food, and I do feel the need to let go of things that feel too hard. It's shocking and sad to me that gardening is one of those things right now, but I'm also ok with it. This stage won't last forever, and in a few years I imagine I'll pick it back up! xo
My kids eat whatever I cook as well, but one of them complains a bit louder than the other. I'm hoping to get my garden back this year, since I've had to start over. But it will never be like the last place.
