We gave up on pie crusts years ago. (I don't recall if that was his problem with the apple pie, but my memory was that I didn't use enough sugar for his taste. He likes things cloyingly sticky sweet.)
He used the ready-made rolled pie crust that I had in the freezer. (I made quiche from time to time with them.)
It was delicious. The apples we have are pretty tart, so the sugar wasn't amiss.

I'd choose to bake something else if I wasn't willing to make my own crust. It's the best part of pie.
