Sprouting

Why have I never done sprouting before?  It seems like such a no-brainer for someone who hoards food as part of emergency preparedness, likes to eat oodles of vegetables and buys wheatberries straight from the farmer ( Read more... )

i sprout, using the same method you are, only i buy a cheap sprouting screen from the store i work at, (which fits over the mouth of a wide-mouth mason jar) where i also buy my sprouting seeds. I like a "spicy" sprout mix the best, but i'm a fan of pretty much any sprouts. my favorite, easy work-time lunch is one use. i halve a whole wheat pita, and toast it in the toaster oven. i spread some veganaise into the pita, then stuff each half with as many sprouts as i can fit, then crumble one hard boiled egg into each side. i sprinkle with a little salt, and it's the perfect lunch. sometimes i add avocado or chopped tomato, but its great without. i add a huge handful of sprouts to the top of my salads, too.

Sounds delicious, and a good use of hard-boiled eggs!

I have got to start sprouting, too. When Andy lived with us, he would sprout sometimes. I think he used cheesecloth instead of a nylon screen.

The sprouts I can't get enough of and buy but should sprout are a mixture of legumes: adzuki, red lentils, maybe chickpeas.

The kinds I usually see in stores look and taste like dental floss: broccoli, alfalfa. These are sweet and hearty and come from a farm in Gill.

An additional benefit of sprouting is that sprouted things generally have more nutrient than their cooked counterparts (i.e. sprouted lentils v. cooked lentils). We sprout pretty much everything. Didn't I once send you a recipe for sprouted wheatberries/yogurt/oranges? Granted, maybe more practical on my end since i have oranges in the yard than I usually know what to do with, but delicious and a great use of wheat berries.

Most kinds of sprouts are good, I do like lentles, the have a sort of peppery flavor. They are great on salads and sandwiches. Iusually pick up seeds at the grocery store, not planting seeds as they often have chemical coating to protect them from insects and fungus and sometimes stuff to help them grow. Sprouts have a lot more viatmins than the seeds themselves.

Sprout away! Oh, some like mung beans need a postive pressure system to sprout.
