You probably think I'm joking.

A dozen people ganged up on me tonight and are making me take the ham radio operator's test.  Apparently, they've got some sudden urge to give me a snazzy little portable ham radio and I've got to get a license first.

The director explained this baffling behavior to me by saying, "we want you because you're good at showing up."

They sound utterly logical to me.

That sounds rather cool, actually.

I know there's also lots of cool volunteer opportunities around here for ham operators - things like working at national rally races and such.

There's some confusion about who exactly constitutes the volunteer citizen emergency response teams. It used to be CERT after 9/11, but then the grant funding went away and grant money showed up in the Medical Reserve Corp ( ... )

No, probably not. :-)

But it seemed pretty weird to me. Maybe it was just some sort of odd proseltyizing religious moment.

They mentioned that in our County (RCOG) that they've got 140 volunteers enrolled. That didn't seem like that many people to me. In fact, that seemed like a really tight-knit community where you could know everyone. Perhaps that's what happened: I know at least two of them and they talked amongst themselves and came after me to recruit me.

I bow to the wisdom of the "masses" in this instance.
