Power (and Heat) to the People

Jun 20, 2008 22:45

I went to an all-day series of workshops today on the subject of community initiatives in the field of sustainable energy.  I didn't know what I didn't know and figured I'd give it a shot to see if I learned anything.  The answer is, yes, I did.  It was so worthwhile that I'm going back tomorrow for more.

Here are some notes.

Why Bosley? Is he on an energy committee? Anyway -- I've been doing bits of advocacy through work for the past several years, and have found that while our reps and senators are generally well intentioned, they can't know the ins and outs of every field. I have found that they generally respond well to thoughtful advocacy -- getting district meetings before budget season starts is pretty easy, and they're always open to hearing informed suggestions about potential solutions, especially from people working in the field. I think it was Donelan who told us it takes only five or six phone calls to put something on his radar... Anyway -- I love advocacy and am happy to chat about it anytime.

And you should *totally* suggest the walmart site for the biomass plant. Because that would be *awesome*.

A perfect site for this would be where the mayor wants to put a Wal*Mart. ROFL. Maybe I can't manage THAT.

Might want to talk to Wal-Mart. You might be surprised at their reaction.

Oh, you don't know the half of it. Wal*mart is the Empire and I'm a Jedi. Wal*mart has been trying to build a store in our small city for fifteen years. We don't have one within twenty miles of us, but the chances of us continuing to hold out our slim: the mayor wants to bring one to town. Whereas I'm working for sustainability and walkable communities and buying local and using less energy and keeping money local and a million zillion relocalization deglobalization sustainable community things, she is all about driving to Wal*mart to buy plastic things and incandescent light bulbs ( ... )
