I ripped out 8 more barberry bushes today, after buying a new shovel.  I made sure to get one with a steel blade that I can sharpen.  I also announced our impending apiary to a bunch of our neighbors.  They all seemed fine with it.  One of the ones with a swimming pool, the ones I was possibly most worried about, said exactly the most perfect thing ( Read more... )

Your daughter writes poems?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Awesome! If she ever wants to talk poetry, send her over. I've got a ton of poetry books that no one in my house but me reads!! Also, take-offs on 13 blackbirds are awesome. Two excellent ones are "13 Ways of Being Looked at by a Possum" by my most favorite Everette Maddox, and "13 Ways of Eating a Tortilla" by some guy in the anthology I used to teach out of. Here's the Maddox poem (and all of his poems on one amazing website): http://www.everettemaddox.org/songbook/thirteenways.shtml I can't find the tortilla one online... (And a sidenote: didn't the P.S. contest pass awhile back?)

Anyway -- congrats on the bushes and congrats on the awards!

Ooh ooh ooh -- and my housemate totally agreed with my plan to rip out the rhododendrons and yew bushes and replace them with raspberries and blackberries. If only the weekends were longer...!
