International Harry Potter Day - Spoilers in comments only!

Last night around 11 pm I went in to wake the children who universally did NOT want to wake up.  I tried to pick Small Boy up, thinking I'd maybe carry him in his pajamas, but he was having none of it.  He clearly said, while standing up with his eyes open, that he didn't want to go to the downtown Bookstore Party afterall.  Luckily, I have a witness to this because he was very recriminating this morning when he got into bed with me and saw my book-marked copy of Harry Potter on my bed.  "Why didn't you WAKE ME!?"

With no children to gripe about it, I walked the mile or so downtown to stand in line at midnight for my pre-purchased book.  It was a social occasion, much fun for me, but perhaps not so much for the dragging children.  Honestly, it was more my thing than theirs.  With book in hand I strolled the starlit mile home and brought a brandy and some cheese and fruit out to my porch and cracked it open.  When weariness set in I got into bed and read a bit more, but nodded off around 3:30.

Just before 9 AM, before the Teen-age Girl awoke, the UPS man rang the doorbell, delivering her copy.  We'll race to finish it and on Monday donate one of the copies to the library, leaving the other copy for the less fanatical menfolk in the family.

I'm back at it this morning.  I have to take breaks every now and then for food or to answer the phone - that's what brought me to my desk just now.  I did get down to the farmer's market to buy some berries.  They make good munching as I read.  I'm supposed to use this gorgeous day to plant my apple trees.  But I can't.  Today is International Harry Potter Day.  There are rules that must be followed.
I'm sad that this semi-annual rite of summer is coming to an end.  We've done this six times now.   The phenomenon hit my daughter at just the right age and I've always loved the books, too.

ETA: Finished at 6:30 pm.  Anyone want to rant in the comments?
