 We've been working on "getting our affairs in order" for a really long time. Even before I was diagnosed with cancer, we had our legal documents done. We've got wills, revocable trusts, powers of attorney, health care proxies... all that is in good order. We know where all our assets are on an up-to-date(ish) balance sheet. When FIL died, we discovered that a full service funeral parlor (one that coordinates with the church, American legion, graveyard, etc) was worth it. The other problem was how to get into his stupid safe. J's brother-in-law figured it out somehow.

Roof needs warranty repair. Who installed the roof? Where is the folder with the house receipts?

Record all life insurance policies. Turned out an early employer of my elder P gave everyone a fully paid (after a few years) life insurance policy covering what was then a years salary. Worked out to about $2k - from 1948. Tells you something about inflation, doesn’t it?

Needed evidence of prior addresses from 60 years ago for a state unclaimed asset claim that didn’t appear for over 10 years post death. I was able to use a 60 year old receipt for an insurance bill.

A friend discovered his step mother had never written a check and had to learn how.

I had to go into triage mode for a long while. We are both still alive and on the mend, but it's been a messy and uneven recovery. I'm currently fighting another attempt at going blind, the chemo having damaged my already damaged eyes. He's trying to act like normal but just ends up exhausted. We're making our way back, though, slowly.
