On being an athlete

My husband turned 63 last month. I'm a financial planner doing retirement plans for people. I keep having fat wheezing guys in front of me talking about their "planning age", i.e., life expectancy, and we all agree that seizing the day is a good idea ( Read more... )

My mother, who is in her 70s, tells us "move now, or when you're my age you won't be able to". And she's not wrong.

A big takeaway from looking at my in-laws has been "don't stop moving." My SIL who is 3 years younger than I am is a lot less mobile, and MIL can't even cross a room anymore.

Hear, hear! And the same for the girls!

I'm 60, and I can out-hike, out-dance, out-swim and out-work most people half my age. Most people who are my age seem like old people already, flabby, stiff and short of breath. It's sad, because I'm going to be losing a lot of peers to self-inflicted senescence.

Along with a couple of our more active friends, we've noticed that most of our generationally similar compatriots have become more interested in passive activity than doing things. Most of my non-theatre-going/non-book-group activities are with people in their 20s/30s.

Dally count yourself lucky that you have a fit, 63 year old hunk who can dance into the night, and that you can still go clubbing after a 12 hour work day! ;-)
