I think it's easy to think Joe is a terrible person because he oppressed women. But I think he's a lovely person, as people go. It's PEOPLE in general that are terrible. He's just one version of them. He's great in some ways, and deficient in others. Being bad at something, or in this case, IGNORANT of something doesn't make me revise my opinion of him, it just shows me the direction of what work is left to do.
I'm not surprised that women weren't believed in 1972. But the idea that he never went back and re-evaluated that story from the lens of what he's learned over the past 45 years sort of shook me. But I took it and ran with it, talking it over with my own 18 year old son in the car on the way home.
