Walking The Boy to school

I hate ice. I heartily and fairly loudly dislike leaving the house in the 7 am winter gloom to be dragged on icy slushy walks by the dog. The dog isn't that into it either - she has already gone out with B for a quick pee and poop while he does her morning ball romp before he leaves for the bus at 6:50. She really just gets this walk because her ( Read more... )

I suppose your town is too small to successfully pay a dog-walker? I know your previous experiences with hiring people for things has been awful in your vicinity, but (perhaps naively) it seems like dog walking for money is something that high school kids can manage and therefore might be in the capabilities of your local labour market?

It's too pitiful for me to hire a dog walker when I need a walk and work from home. I really only need it on days when it's icy and/or I'm overwhelmed at work, and there's no feasible way to hire people for that sort of schedule anyway.

I have hired dog walkers in the past, though, when we were going out of town.

This year I bought a pair of YakTrax, those slip on crampon-like things. Holy cow did it dramatically increase the amount of joy I experience winter walking/hiking.

I really liked mine, too, but then towards the end of winter it broke and I sort of forgot to order new ones and now, here I am again, wishing I had them. This is the third year that I'd have to purchase new ones (I lost the ones a couple of years ago after one winter, just couldn't find them again the next year). It certainly does help during that short window when I am owning and using them, though.

What kind did you get; walk, run, or pro? We need something like this but I never knew what they were called (actual crampons seem like overkill).

My husband has the 'walk' and I got a fancier version that was $60 at REI. It's more spikey but I also think it will last longer.

I could never walk my dog far enough for her to get any exercise. Throwing the frisbee twenty minutes for her does the trick. I only have to navigate a bit of glacier over the ledges to the berrygrounds in my LL Bean Stabilicers.
