Saving for College: my thoughts on 529 plans

I'm not in love with 529 plans. I think they are really fabulous in a few settings, but most of the time they'd be my third or fourth choice for ways to save for college

The kids Godfather carries a 529 plan for them and does some damn thing with it, I don't even know. It probably makes sense for him as a tax vehicle, since with no kids and two Google salaries they've got to be looking for every deduction they can get their fingers on

One of the most contentious arguments my husband and I have had was regarding the age based 529 plans we have for our 3 kids. I wanted to switch them to something (anything!) else but when ultimately accused of wanting to destroy their future by taking the risk ended up dropping the subject altogether.
