Good for you and your attitude and thought process.

My folks didn't pay for my college or graduate school--they couldn't. I had scholarships, some inheritance, and loans. I had to do it on my own. My folks did help with books, and paid for me to come home and visit, but I had to do it on my own. They raised me so that I was "ready to be launched" and I was. In looking back at all that, I'm far better off for the way they did it.

I see these grandparents going through what you describe, and it makes me cringe. Their children and grandchildren are being done such a disservice.

Ugh.

I'm not after a pat on the back here, I'm really just trying to explore what this means and different ways to look at it, and to do it ( ... )

Somehow protecting our children has turned into overprotectiveness. I see it all the time. Your examples about the kid with the pacifier and the 9-year-old who can't cross the street by himself are examples. Protecting our children from external evil is a very good thing. Protecting them to the point where they can't deal with life, with its expectations and requirements is horrible--for them ( ... )
