Talk to me about sandwiches. What is your favorite sandwich?

What makes a good sandwich?

What takes a good sandwich and makes it great?

What's the most unusual/brilliant thing you've ever seen/eaten on a sandwich?

Discuss.

Two slices of white toast, with mayonnaise, sliced tomato, a clove of fresh crushed garlic, and maybe some thinly sliced Halloumi cheese. Oh baby.

What makes a good sandwich? Flavour; lack of sog; the right amount of fillings to be satisfying and yet not fall out.

Any sandwich is better with onion or garlic, I think. I have always found PB and J disgusting, but PB and thinly sliced Vidalias? Yum!

I'm quite fond of a slice of Italian or French bread with crunchy peanut butter, cottage cheese, and a drizzle of honey. Sounds weird, but it's a big energy booster.

"crunchy peanut butter, cottage cheese, and a drizzle of honey"

That seriously is the weirdest sandwich I have ever heard of. I'm sure that it's an energy booster, but does it taste okay? It sounds scary and squishy.

Open faced, single layer of each element, regular cottage cheese that's been drained a bit, clover honey. Plain PB works, too. I threw this together one night when I was a teenager, babysitting in a house that wasn't vegetarian-friendly, and desperate for fuel to keep up with the little blighters. :)

french toast + cheese + back bacon + [(onions + mushrooms+eggs)*fried in bacon fat] + steak + normal bacon + more cheese + french toast = sandwich

better eating through maths!

We actually did a hot dog wrapped in bacon, battered it and deep fried it at work. It was awful and delicious.

excellent bread (obviously)
unexpected veg/fruit
unexpected flavour you can't place but is awesome
unexpected greens--esp artisanal sprouts

conversely, nothing kills a sandwich deader than limp lettuce, acidy onion and gross tomato, especially when they make no sense being there.

They used to make this interesting curried chicken salad with half grapes in on a seedy bread with (I think) sprouts at this place in Kingston. Simple but nice.

I love interesting sausages in sandwiches, because the just a bit too greasiness of some sausages are balanced by the bread to be just right and artisanal ones make for unique sandwiches.

Yeah, uniqueness in general, new flavour combinations or old ones repurposed into sandwich form.

Grilled cheese with old cheddar, apple, onion!

My favourite though is still the brie and avacado at The Green Room. I just can't seem to make it the same way at home.

Probably because there's no spit in it.
