Our Dad had a wardrobe in his bedroom which locked... it was where he stashed presents and important documents and such (We only cared about the presents). Reframe it: you are cautious in your outlook and your expectations. If you like, you can add an adverb and say you are realistically cautious.

Even "pessimistic" is better than "having abysmally low self-esteem," or "...self-loathing" which is where some people are at, or being outright self-destructive, which is where others are and which seems to me to be worse, still, and you're doing better than "pessimism as a base line," so if I may play sidewalk psychologist, here, you're doing okay (which term is meant very, very broadly, covering a wide range of "okay-ness.")

Another note worth, in my opinion, pondering: There is NO ONE, no matter how self-confident, self-loving and secure in their outlook, whose self-esteem can't stand some improvement. NO. ONE.
