My experience with applied statistics has been fun in large part because it involved making the Bayesian rubber meet the road of inherent computational complexity, and because it allowed me to define and explore theoretical concepts and tie them to our applied problem... Sometimes I think the MLE could be defined as the statistic that the feeblest imbecile would use as an estimator.

But that doesn't always work. Lucien LeCam wrote an article titled "Maximum Likelihood: An Introduction". Warning: the title of the article could be considered somewhat sarcastic.
