Looks like a gap in the clouds to me, but the shadow color of the figure is the same color, so they blend together to look like long hair...

I'm pretty sure the GL script was made-up episode-by-episode. This is one of those earlier ideas they didn't really follow up on (like the whole glance-into-the-future garlock thing at the beginning).

This makes sense...and is also kind of disappointing.

Yeah... I was kind of disappointed with where they went with the second future/space arc; the randomness of it and the way it didn't line up with previous events gave me the impression that Gainax was kind of winging it. I mean, I liked it, but the first half of the series just seemed to have a lot more foresight and creative vision imo.
