Those little toys are so cute! If Gainax ever started selling plushies of some of the animals in TTGL, I'd but a grapehippo plush in a second. ;__;
Also, I know that the manga labels the names of some of the animals in chapter four. 2. Pigmy Cowhead 3. White Sandcrorabbit 5. Slimy grapehippo 6. Fishamacallit
I remember seeing the Tobitanuki being referred to as a flying raccoon somewhere, but it probably wasn't official.
And what about the whole magnitude of fauna Nia used for her dishes? Have you looked into those pots? I want to know more about those... Anything relating to the Gurren world is an object of my interest.
Oh jeez, I don't even know. x_x I doubt there's anything about that written anywhere, so probably your best hope would be to ask Nakashima directly and he'll start making stuff up on the spot.
I love these stupid animals, the herding heron especially. The majesty of a bunch of giant birds -- running around yelling OREO with their tongues flapping -- is almost overwhelming.
I think it's parsed "ore-ore-ore." I don't know if this is purely onomatopoetic or if they're saying "Me, me, me" -- kind of like the seagulls in Finding Nemo with their unending cry of "Mine, mine!"
Yeah, it's "ore ore ore." I dunno if the fact that it's written in katakana would make it more likely that it's supposed to mean "Me, me, me," but I guess it could go either way.
Just to get more info in one place, here's a "survey" of sources for English-language names of the critters. I realize this duplicates some information already given in comments.
