I don't know Japanese, but I think that the initial translation does make a sort of sense-- it would be a pretty horrible death, for those who were kicked out, whether they were actively killed or died of starvation due to being cut off from the village's meager resources.
Gimmy and Darry, on the other hand, did have a chance to actually go up to the surface and live there, thanks to Simon and the others. So he just chose the two whose absence would not tear apart any families, and the priest was telling Rossiu not to feel too bad for them since they weren't going to die.
I could be totally wrong on this, of course (haven't watched the episode in awhile). XD It's true that in this light, the second sentence is a little bit of a jump in the conversation...
Put it that way... it does make sense. But yeah, the jump strikes me as odd, and I can't help but feel like we should be getting some piece of information about Rossiu's circumstances from this.
By this point, Rossiu still believes his mother ascended to heaven, a presumably better place, but the priest has just informed him, "nope, we just sent her off to die! :D :D :D"
