Oh Maiden, Advance with a Sword and a Rose by Arika Takarano

"I wonder what made you become Lolita? Is it because you wanted to wear cute clothes? Because you like lace and frills? Because you wanted to be like someone? Or was it because you wanted to become cute so you'd be popular with the guys?
No, no, that's impossible isn't it? After all ( Read more... )

This reminds me of why I fell in love with lolita in the first place.

ok so, towards the end, it's a pretty pleasant essay. i like the bits about the sense of beauty being coupled with intelligence, and the delicacy being coupled with strength to stand straight in this world. the bit about confidence and modesty. i'll even admit that the desire to hide in a cocoon where only softness and beauty will transpire is something i've often felt, and lolita is a way in which i live that escapism out ( ... )

Ahh seriously, I think people tend to take themselves too seriously when it comes to Lolita. What I read here, I don't directly relate it to "being a Lolita", for me it's about a feeling that even non-lolita people can have. You already know the way I feel about this, but I don't really need to convince anyone of it, nor to make a statement of what lolita is for me and announce it to the world, which seems to be the cool thing to do lately, to impose beliefs. I don't believe anyone is more of a true lolita for thinking this or that way, for me what makes someone a lolita is the common fashion, the look, the clothes, and if they want to wear them and not call themselves lolita I'm ok with it too XD.
And no I don't really read François' blog x_x I don't have enough time and honestly I'm not that interested. And I dislike drama way too much, that's why I stay away from the Spanish "scene" or any forums XD. Too much stupidity going on.

*What I'm saying above refers to both the people who call themselves lifestyle lolitas and the ones being all bitchy about "omg it's just clothes you dumb assholes" etc etc

well, yeah...see, the lifestyle stuff, even if it's not for me, i can perfectly see its appeal and find it very charming. i just personally can't see how it's intrinsically linked to lolita, which for me, is first and foremost a fashion, and at most, a certain aesthetic sensibility turned towards things such as old-fashioned feminity, the opulence of days long gone, or the darkness and creepiness of gothic. if someone decides to let those aesthetics inspire them in their life as a whole, then that's perfectly fine. and the essay above is a lovely way to look at it. there's certainly also people out there who don't know about lolita or who don't want to get involved with lolita but share a similar attitude and tastes in life ( ... )

Actually, the comparison between lolita clothing and a knight in armor really annoys me (but I guess that's because I'm a boring European Middle-Ages History major). So mostly because of that I can't really agree with what's written above. And the first part of the text made me giggle ( ... )
