In Lars and the Real Girl, one character asks another, "How'd you know that you were a man?" Well, it's not like you're one thing or the other, okay? There's still a kid inside but you grow up when you decide to do right, okay, and not what's right for you, what's right for everybody, even when it hurts

I did see Lars..., and it was an excellent film, and the scene you just quoted from was one of the best scenes. It does a great job of summing up the marks of manhood from the perspective of the non-believer. The points he makes give faces to the sometimes more abstract descriptors selflessness, honesty, fidelity and humility.
