“You can’t talk in hospital without being heard by the nurses. And nurses love me.”
“Nii chan,” Nino came to where he knew his brother would go when the world was too harsh with him. He found the doctor hugging his knees, messy and broken.
“Kazu,” Sho looked up and revealed his bloodshot eyes.
Nino’s heart pained by looking at his devastated brother. He had enough of this scene in the past 8 years and when it was finally lessened, he had to deal with it again in a bigger scale, “Hey, Nii chan, don’t shed your tears. That jerk doesn’t deserve it.”
“Let me for a moment, please. Just this one last moment.”
Nino sighed. He understood that Jun’s appearance had opened an unhealed scar and torn it all over again.
He sat beside Sho and wrapped his arm around Sho’s shoulder, brushing his hand slowly as his mind wandered to the dreary feeling he had about Satoshi and Jun and his brother and Masaki and every mess that happened between them all.
“How did we fall into all this, Nii chan?”
“I don’t know.”
“I started it all. I was too curious about Oh chan,” Nino choked as he spelled the name that he loved too much.
“Take him back, Kazu,” Sho whispered, “At least one of us has to gain something good from this... disaster.”
“No, Nii chan. Not when you’re suffering this much. No,” Nino rested his head on Sho’s shoulder as fresh tears made their way out of Nino’s eyes, “And even if I do want to take him back.. I don’t think he wants to. He said he doesn’t love me. He didn’t love me.”
“That’s non sense.”
“We’re pathetic. Both of us love them so much with every ounce of our pitiful hearts when they’ve never been in love with any of us. We’re pathetic.”
“No, Ohno kun loves-”
“Stop, Nii chan, don’t make it any harder than this. Let’s just move on, okay?” Nino’s hoarse voice was demanding, “I just hope you trust me enough to tell me when you saw Jun in Paris back then. Because if you did, I would be already moved on by now.”
Sho knew it was not true because not even him could move on from Jun after all those torturing years. But he kept silent, didn’t want to worsen the situation. Both of them were already pained too much, a little bit more and they would break.
“I don’t know what to believe in anymore, Nii chan. All these years I believe that he at least loved me but the fact is he didn’t.”
“I don’t know either,” Sho rubbed his hands to his face.
Sho’s cellphone rang a dull plain ring. He wiped the remaining tears and cleared his throat, trying to sound as decent as he could, “Yeah, Kiko chan?”
There was a short conversation before Sho hung up, stood up, and pulled Nino.
“What is it, Nii chan?”
“This day hasn’t over yet.”
*******
Akiko put her cellphone down and turned to face Satoshi, “Oh, Ohno kun, do you believe that Sho would believe his Jun chan’s words? Do you believe that Nino kun would believe your baby brother’s words? His brother was betrayed and left by someone who’s already have a family - son and all - doesn’t it sound familiar to you, Ohno kun? If you were him, would you believe it? Oh, I don’t think so. You’d take your brother to the other part of the world as far as I know.”
Satoshi gulped down. The words were so true that he felt so stupid about himself.
Aiba screamed, “You’re really wicked, Akiko!”
“Marry me, Masaki, and everything will be fine again.”
Aiba shut his mouth, as if he was considering that option.
“Don’t you dare,” Jun threatened Masaki.
“But-”
Jun was about to open his mouth again but the door was opened and Sho walked in.
“What happened, Kiko chan?” Sho approached Akiko and looked stunned when he saw all the people in the room, “What’s this?”
“Nii san,” Aiba started. He felt so weird for calling Sho with that again after so long, “Listen, this wicked witch lied to Jun. She showed Jun a fake pregnancy result saying that it was your baby. That’s why Jun left you, he thought you cheated on him!”
“Hah?” Sho was confused. He darted his eyes to Aiba then to Jun.
“It was in the morning before you departed to Korea,” Jun added in a mumble. His heart was a complete chaos.
It sounds so silly even to myself now, how could I expect him to believe me?
“Hah?” Sho turned his head to Akiko.
“I was with you,” Akiko looked at Sho with teary eyes. Fake teary eyes.
“Can somebody tell me what is this now?” Nino who was behind Sho demanded an explanation.
“That’s the truth,” Satoshi was shaking. He didn’t even lift his head to meet Nino’s eyes. He felt so shocked. It was like his whole life was a lie. A very cruel lie.
“She was with me that day, don’t tell lies, Aiba san, Matsumoto san,” Sho tried his best to sound calm.
“It’s not a lie, Nii san! That’s the truth! This crazy woman messed up with our lives! Gosh, Nii san, you know what? Shori is-”
“This crazy woman is my fiancee, Aiba san. And I’d be very delighted if you don’t talk so rude about her,” Sho stepped closer to Aiba in a threatening manner, “I don’t want to meddle with your little happy family so don’t you dare to meddle with mine.”
Jun’s soul deflated at once.
Sho grabbed Akiko’s hand, “Well then, please excuse us. We still have many things to do.”
He bowed slightly and began to walk away with a furious expression.
“Shori is your son!” Aiba desperately screamed.
Sho stopped his step. Silence emerged.
“Don’t talk non sense, Aiba san,” Sho finally talked and resumed his walk.
Nino looked around in confusion, there’s a little doubt in his eyes. Doubt that looked like hope for the rest of the room.
But he turned on his heel and began to step out.
“Nino..,” Satoshi called with a weak voice.
“Yes?” Nino stopped in front of the door, letting his brother to leave him.
“Don’t go,” Satoshi pleaded. No one noticed but his tears were already overflowing by then.
There’s a short pause, as if Nino was considering the options that he had. With a sad expression he made his choice, “I’m sorry, Ohno san, I have to follow my brother.”
*******
Toma was the first person they ran to in an attempt to make some proof. To their surprise, Toma was already waiting for them.
Jun started, “Toma, I ne-”
“I already submitted Sho’s and Shori’s samples for DNA test. I stole them, sue me later,” Toma cut.
“Wha-”
“You can’t talk in hospital without being heard by the nurses. And nurses love me,” Toma made short explanation, “Cut the confusion, let’s talk about the real deal. It takes around seven days for the test and Sho’s marriage is on Sunday, six days from now. I don’t think it would make it.”
“Oh, God,” Jun dropped his body to the chair, suddenly he felt dizzy.
“Can’t you make it faster?” Satoshi asked.
“We’re talking about me doing illegal test on this hospital owner’s son, Ohno kun, I’ll try but I can’t promise anything,” Toma said, “If any of you can make him to wait for the result, it would be a huge help.”
“I’ll go to him,” Jun stood up and dashed.
“I’ll try to talk with Kazu,” Satoshi had gather himself back and was determined to make everything right again.
Both of them dashed out, leaving Aiba alone with Toma.
“Ano.. Sensei,” Aiba sounded unsure.
“Call me Toma, I heard a lot about you back then, Aiba kun,” Toma said with a smile.
“Yeah, I heard a lot about you too,” Aiba smiled back. He scratched the back of his head when he continued, “I have a back up plan, but I need a help on few things, can you help me?”
Toma didn’t see it coming. But then, he didn’t see any of the things that happened in that day coming.
“Anything for the truth.”
*******
“I’m sorry, Ohno sama, Matsumoto sama, but our young masters commanded us to forbid you from coming in,” a maid bowed and closed the gate in front of Jun’s and Satoshi’s faces.
Now they knew how Sho and Nino felt years ago.
“Please, just a moment,” Jun begged, “Please.”
“I’m sorry,” the maid bowed again and left.
For a split second, Satoshi could see Nino peeking from his window at the second floor.
Satoshi shook the gate harshly, making it rustled noisily. He screamed, “Kazu! Kazu, please!”
Jun followed his brother’s example, “Sho chan! Come out! We need to talk!”
Their screams were so loud, there’s no way Sho and Nino didn’t hear that. Jun and Satoshi continued their screams for a few minutes but there’s no Sho or Nino. The security came up instead.
“I’m sorry, but you have to leave,” the security said firmly and grabbed both Jun’s and Satoshi’s arms to drag them away.
Both desperate men struggled and Satoshi yelled, “Alright, alright, we won’t make a fuss. Let us just wait here!”
The security didn’t buy it.
“We’re not even in your property anymore, geez!” Satoshi trashed his hands and pushed the security away.
“But if you make any noi-”
“We won’t. Just let us wait here,” Jun cut the security’s words.
The security understood and left them, going back to the post with eyes still lurking to the two desperate men.
Jun and Satoshi stood there, hands clutching to the iron fence. They didn’t budge even when an hour already spent and the sun was already setting.
“I’m sorry, Nii chan. I should have confirmed it first - about the baby, about everything. I’m sorry, I was stupid. I am stupid,” Jun finally opened his mouth. He sighed and slumped down to the dirty ground.
“We are all stupid,” Satoshi gritted his teeth, mad at himself more than to anyone else. His hand formed a fist as determination overwhelmed him, “But forget about it first, we have to make this right again. We have to.”
That very moment, a drop of rain fell from the sky. Satoshi looked up at the dark clouds that were hanging on top of them. Not so long after, heavy rain poured down without mercy.
Neither Jun nor Satoshi was troubled by the rain. The thought of leaving never crossed their minds. Not even for a split second. Their goal was crystal clear; to get the truth revealed and to redeem the wasted years.
Not until they were soaked through and through did any of them make a move.
“Go home, Jun,” Satoshi gave a command.
“No,” Jun’s voice was calm and fierce.
“Go home. I can handle this,” Satoshi’s eyes were locked to Nino’s window which was opened for a slight second again, “You can’t afford to be sick. Shori needs you.”
The words were hitting the right button. Jun pondered.
“Go home..,” Satoshi repeated again, “.. for now. I’m not telling you to stop, just go home for now.”
Shori’s face ambushed Jun’s mind. He really couldn’t afford to be sick. Not when his son was in a hospital. Not when his son’s father was about to marry the cruelest person ever alive.
“I’ll go back to Shori for now. I’ll send someone to come with raincoat.”
“No need to.”
“You can’t afford to be sick too.”
“I won’t,” Satoshi looked up at Nino’s window again, “My Kazu won’t let that happen. I believe in him.”
Jun understood. He patted his brother’s back and retreated, thinking that there might be another way to make everyone hear the truth.
Satoshi was left alone, drenched in heavy downpour, waiting for Nino and believing in Nino.
His volition was never diminished.
Not even when he slowly lost his consciousness and fell to the muddy ground.
*******
Nino looked at the unconscious man in his bed. He wanted to touch the man, he wanted to hug him, to kiss and to take the man back into his life. But his heart was hurt, his mind was scattered, his faith to this very man was pretty much shaken.
Nino refreshed the compress on Satoshi’s forehead. He was outright running into the rain when Satoshi fell down to the ground, fainted.
Baka, Nino cursed in his mind, baka like always.
Nino couldn’t believe after all those years, he finally could be this close to Satoshi again. And he also still couldn’t believe that when he finally met the man that he’d searched for eight fucking years, he would have to turn his back on that man.
Nino had made his decision; he would take the path that won’t hurt his brother. For Sakurai Sho was the only human in this world who had stayed in all his ups and downs. All of them.
A slight movement from Satoshi startled Nino. He stood up, ready to escape the scene.
“Kazu,” Satoshi struggled to sit up.
“Kazu, don’t go,” Satoshi moved faster as he saw Nino was already in front of the door. He slipped and fell to the floor but he didn’t care, “Please, wait, listen to me. Please. For once.”
Nino stopped because of the loud thump and winced. He still didn’t have the heart to let Satoshi be in pain.
“I don’t think I want to listen anything from you, Ohno san,” Nino gulped down, he turned his back to Satoshi because he was afraid that his heart would soften, “If you’re already well enough to try to talk about nothing, please go back to your home.”
“I love you,” Satoshi screamed.
“You said you didn’t,” Nino bitterly smirked, “I don’t know what I can believe from you and what I can’t anymore, Ohno san. So I prefer to listen nothing.”
“I’m a fool, I’m a moron. That. You can believe in that,” Satoshi reached Nino and hugged him from behind. His body was burning hot from the fever, his figure was shaking, “Please, Kazu. Let’s do this right at least this once. Not talking has ruined us, can’t you see that?!”
Nino exploded. He freed himself roughly from Satoshi and turned to snap, “The one who was not talking was you. I searched for you, tried to talk to you. I’ve spent years of my life just for that exact thing, Oh chan! To talk with you!”
“That’s why I said that I’m a fool! I’m a moron!” Satoshi grabbed Nino’s shoulders, “Now let me atone for my fault and let’s talk, okay? Please, Kazu, I beg you.”
Nino was torn. One part of himself wanted to ignore Satoshi and leave him, but the other part of himself was desperate to hear anything that Satoshi wanted to say.
He fought with himself, considering what to do.
I already decided; nothing this man would say could alter my decision. Nothing. Right?
He knew the biggest chunk of his heart was still Satoshi’s when he sighed and decided to close the door, “I’m not promising that I will believe in you.”
“You can decide later,” Satoshi’s eyes twinkled. At least he got a chance now.
Nino heaved a deep sigh. Again. He cursed himself internally for being so weak. But he couldn’t help it.
He pushed Satoshi by the shoulder until the older was lying back on the bed.
Nino sat by the bedside and took the compress, searching for something to focus on other than Satoshi.
“You better start talking,” Nino’s voice sounded harsh but his hands were gentle as he wiped Satoshi’s sweat.
Satoshi gulped down, he tried to get his brain arranged. He only had one chance and he didn’t want to ruin it.
And really, fever worsened everything.
Satoshi wouldn’t want to admit it later, but a certain sentence told by Akiko helped him. Big time.
“You must be really mad, right? Knowing that Jun has cheated on Sho kun, even already has a son with someone else?” Satoshi started.
Nino stopped his movement. He gripped the cloth tighter until his veins were visible. But he relaxed not so long after.
“Yeah, of course. That’s why this conversation is actually just a waste of time.”
“And that’s why you decided to turn your back on me, even though earlier this morning you said that you love me?” Satoshi grabbed Nino’s hand, “Don’t deny it, Kazu, I heard it loud and clear.”
Nino pulled his hand back and drown the cloth into a bowl of cold water. He was at lost of what to do.
“You gave up on me. You refused to listen to me and even though you’re here now and listening to me, I believe your decision is already made beforehand - you won’t come back to me, because you know it might hurt your brother if we’re together. Right?”
Nino placed the cloth on Satoshi’s forehead, pressing it gently but not answering the older man.
“Well, that’s.. that’s what happened to me too,” Satoshi breathed out.
Nino looked up, didn’t quite understand what Satoshi meant.
“One day I got a call from Masaki. Jun fainted, he said. I came there and I found Jun was there, crying his heart out. He said he was pregnant, with Sho kun’s baby. Then, he told me about Kiko. He met Kiko earlier that day and that girl told him that she was also pregnant with Sho kun’s baby. She said that Sho kun didn’t even love him and that Sho kun was about to marry her. We believed that because, well, Sho kun was about to go to Korea without clear reason and Kiko said that her parents were there,” Satoshi paused. He saw Nino’s pupils dilated. Then, he added, “If you were me, Kazu, wouldn’t you do what I did? Taking my brother away from the man who broke his heart into ashes?”
“No. I would beat the hell out of that man,” Nino snapped.
“Jun forbade me to do so. He was pregnant, Kazu. Pregnant with Sakurai’s baby. The last of Sakurai. He was afraid that Sho kun would take his baby away and dump him,” Satoshi’s voice was hoarse, “Now tell me, wouldn’t you do what I did if you were me?”
Nino mulled. It was all started to make sense to him. But there was still a little doubt in him.
Which is true? Which is not? Can I believe him now?
“Hey, Kazu, I know you couldn’t just suddenly believe in me, but let’s take it this way; that girl is probably the biggest and cruelest fraud in this world, would you let your brother marry that girl?”
Nino looked at Satoshi’s eyes, searching for any hint - of lies and truths.
“We’re running a DNA test, to prove that Shori is really Sho kun’s son. Jun has never cheated on anyone. Never, Kazu. Give us more time and you’ll see the truth. All we need is time,” Satoshi begged.
Nino pondered. Satoshi was right, there’s no way he could let his brother to marry a fraud. Not when it was all still not clear.
Nino wiped his wet hands with dry cloth, looked like he was preparing to leave. While doing so, he said, “You know what, Ohno san? My brother went to Korea to meet her parents, it was the truth.”
Ohno’s brows furrowed.
“He also went there to prepare for a marriage. That was true, too. But believe me, it wasn't like you think it was,” Nino stood up.
Ohno felt a massive weight was dropped to his heart. But he already decided, he would believe his love.
“I believe in you. I always do. Like I love you. I always do.”
Nino was already half way to the door when - without turning his head to Satoshi - he added, “I’ll ask my driver to take you home for now. I’ll try to talk to him, but the decision would still be his. I’ll follow anything he choose.”
*******
Satoshi was taken home by Nino’s driver and arrived at his home a little bit past midnight. Aiba was there, but Jun wasn’t. Apparently, Jun ordered Aiba to wait for Satoshi while he’s at hospital to accompany Shori.
“Nii san, you alright? Gosh, you have fever,” Aiba took Satoshi’s coat off and took him to the bedroom.
“How’s Jun?” Satoshi asked.
Aiba smiled a bit, “He’s alright. He’s a strong man, he can keep his calm and smile in front of Shori.”
“I know he’s a strong man,” Satoshi smiled.
“How’s it, Nii san?” Aiba was hesitant at first, minding about Satoshi’s condition, but he couldn’t help it. He had to know what happened.
“Kazu is trying to talk with his brother. I’m waiting for any news from him.”
“Good,” Aiba was relieved. He pulled the comforter to cover Satoshi’s body and said, “Good night, Nii san. Rest well for now.”
Satoshi nodded and closed his eyes. He was so dizzy.
Aiba walked downstairs. He was prepared to leave the house and go back to the hospital to accompany Okada.
A ringing voice heard and he stopped his steps.
The ringing voice came from Satoshi’s coat. Aiba took it and Nino’s name flashed on the screen.
Aiba answered it.
“Hallo, Nino. I’m Masaki. Sato nii san is sleeping right now but if-”
“Cut it Masaki, I’ll just talk to you,” Nino sounded like he was in a rush, “Sho nii chan decided to move the wedding day sooner. The wedding is the day after tomorrow.”
“What?” Aiba’s jaw was dropped.
“I tried to talk but he wouldn’t listen. Apparently his fiancee is very supportive about this idea,” Nino sighed, “I’ll try to do something about the DNA test. Maybe I can make it faster, I own that hospital, after all. Who’s taking the test?”
“Toma,” Aiba couldn’t focus anymore.
“Ah. That would be easier. Alright, I’ll see what I can do, but I can’t promise anything - two days are way too short.”
Aiba's brain was short circuited.
“Ah, Masaki,” Nino sounded like he was not sure of what he's about to say, “How's he?”
It was from a mere luck that Aiba still had a brain to answer, “Has fever but he's fine, I guess. He's sleeping.”
A sigh of relief could be heard, “Alright, then. I'm hanging up.”
Nino terminated the connection.
Aiba was frozen for some minutes. As a desperate attempt, he reached for his phone and dialed a number.
“Hallo?” a girl picked up.
“I’ll marry you,” Aiba said, “Just confess already, I beg you.”
There’s a short silence.
“Do you think I’m stupid? I won’t confess before you marry me,” Akiko chuckled devilishly, “I’ll marry Sakurai Sho the day after tomorrow, you know?”
“I’ll marry you,” Aiba repeated, “Cancel your marriage with Sho nii san, I’m going to marry you. I.. I need to tell this to my parents first, so it would be impossible to marry you in two days. But..,” Aiba racked his brain, “Uh.. Listen, there will be a massive press conference later this week, held by Ohno and Matsumoto family and also my family to announce the change of the leaders. I’ll.. I’ll propose you there, in front of the world’s eyes. Cancel your marriage and confess right after the press conference, okay?”
Akiko sounded so happy when she asked, “Is this for real?”
Aiba closed his eyes. He was trembling. His heart was refusing it.
But deep inside, he knew he was the one who made all of this happened. So he inhaled and pooled all the determination he had in him.
“Yes. I’m going to marry you.”
