The time has come to evacuate.
Guppy heads up to his room to grab a few things. The photo of his wife and kids. The singing rock. The irreplacable things...
When he goes from the kitchen back into his room, he jumps. It's changed. It's been doing that lately. The other day, there was a horrific drawing done all over his stuff in
sharpie and what seemed to be saliva. This time, it's sharpie marker again, but it's in simple neat writing. And, next to it, rows of neat
musical notes.*
'Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's exploding
And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour,
The crystal has appeared and T minus, disappeared,
The orders from the bar are going sour,
There's alarmed security at all the cracks that we can see,
There's holes appearing out back every day
No-one's keeping calm, the target range has got a bomb,
And it looks like we'll fall in the Milky Way
Someone saw the horsemen and another saw distortion,
Other patrons tried to keep things safe aside.
The Tower and the Star picked out a ominous old card
Urq killed by Teja, dogs his bones they did debride
When the crystal turned to red, the living and the dead
Were advised to rapidly evacuate
So they jumped into a world, scattered round or sometimes hurled
In order not to meet a grisley fate.
The universe itself keeps on expanding never-ending
The end of time is really quite a myth
And so do not despair, do not wail and lose your hair
Powers beyond your wildest dreams, out of you take the piss.
So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure
This place returns with happy times and mirth
You'll see your family and friends at home and outer space,
Now don't you fret, and bugger off to Earth.
- Alexander Jefry Sandhu, February 21st, 2023.'
As he reaches the last line, he hears movement behind him. Someone opens the door. He looks around...
"Frogspawn! Don't let that door close!"
Fran Sandhu blinks in bewilderment as she gets her first glimpse of the secret life her husband has only been able to show her photos of for the last four years. Then, common sense kicks in, and she wedges a doorstop in the door.
"You were gone hours, that's not like you. So I took the kids to Hannah's and tried all the doors..." Frogspawn steps into the room and goes to the window.
"Wow." she says. "It's just like you described, the lake, the mountains... what are all those craters?"
"Frogs!" Guppy recovers from his surprise and glomps her in a hug, struggling to hold back tears. "The bar is having an apocalypse, I was bound, I couldn't get back and I started to relapse and I've been drinking and my medication from here has disappeared and I was going to have to evacuate to another world... and I'm sorry that with all your interest in space I can't show you around but if we close that door we'll be trapped and die..."
Fran rubs his back gently and holds him close.
"I don't need to see the universe. I found you." she says quietly. "The rest can wait. Have you left a note for your friends? They'll be worried if they're evacuating."
"I... I can't get it out the door, but I can leave one in here and leave it unlocked. They know where to look for me."
Guppy grabs some paper and scribbles a note.
'Been rescued by Frogspawn. Couldn't get out of the room to tell you. Get out and stay safe, and see you soon. Guppy.'
They join hands, and head back through the door into their world.
"Did Fry write that thing on the wall? In the future?"
"Looks like it."
"He doesn't inherit his spelling skills from me then..."
[Two days later:
At the moment of the allpocalypse, there is a flash of light in room 147, a flash of nude flesh, and the pair appear back on the bed.
"...You're not about to make a bad joke about the Earth moving are you." Guppy whispers, staring in shock around the room.
"Thought about it." Frogspawn admits, disentangling herself from her husband and grabbing a pyjama top of his that he hadn't packed. She slips it on and goes to the window. "It looks fixed out there though."
Guppy peeps out. Well, some of the craters seem to have gone.
"Let's not take the chance." he says. "Check we can get out? If I touch the door it might not work."
Frogspawn takes the door, and opens it.
"We're good." she says. "C'mon. I love you until the end of time, but I'd rather that wasn't right now."
