Yet another 'P' Word

Play.  Seems simple enough.  It's what we did as children, usually with the words 'go outside and ...'.  In the case of my children, it's how they got 'punished' - "quit reading - go outside and .....".

Just what is it that children do when they play?  They learn.  Not in the formal classroom sense.  They learn by doing.  Something.  Or lots of

I use the term 'play' in the same way a lot - meaning that I'm trying to figure out how something works or what its limits are. And I get the same blank look of not understanding what I mean from people in charge. And then I have to explain.
