Nugget update

Apr 30, 2010 09:57

It's been a while since I provided a nugget update, and much has happened. After shimmeringstar1  left, we finally had a few days of sunny warm weather, and we decided to let Harriet and the nuggets out of the cage to scratch around outside. The first day went great. Harriett led the nuggets around and showed them how to scratch in the dirt, and she taught them ( Read more... )

Ever since they made the law to allow for backyard chickens in Madison I've been wanting a small flock of my own here in Milwaukee. Sounds so cool. I used to live in the country years ago and never though of chickens imprinting on a human. Maybe the flock kept where I was were too big for such individualized attention.

I have to say that chickens are very easy to keep. They're pretty self reliant and easy to manage. There are a few places online that sell chicken coops/shelters designed for backyard use. They'll only hold a hen or two, but that's enough for some fresh eggs.

Hmmm I'll have to look into those coops...here hoping Milwaukee takes Madison's cue and allows backyard chickens.

This may be part of the "ask a stupid question" category, but do you know their gender yet? And if one's a rooster, will that cause issues in...well...the pecking order?

We think that Gray Nugget is probably a rooster, but we won't know for certain until they're a bit older and have their adult features.

The banties (nuggets) shouldn't have dominance issues with the larger chickens; if more than one nugget turns out to be male, though, that would cause problems.

I'm glad the nuggets are faring well, despite being abandoned by Harriet (though hopefully this has got the broodiness out of her system). Kate as nugget-mom does sound adorable and dedicated!

Hee! Hope introducing them goes well when they're old enough :)

The nuggets are still thriving, and they are slowing learning independence.

This just had me rolling around. I'm imprinted with the image of you chaps on worm-dig duty for your brood.
