Adam Barry, assistant professor in the department of health and kinesiology, said he is studying how individuals interpret the concept of responsible drinking. He specifically looks at commercials that advertise alcoholic beverages, especially ones with tags that tell viewers to “drink responsibly.”
“This is counterintuitive because advertisers are just trying to sell their product,” he said. “They put out messages that are prodrinking, yet tell people to drink responsibly. People perceive these messages as the way people drink responsibly, when it isn’t.”
