East of Eden
It’s not really that Jenny’s beautiful. Or, well, it totally is, but there’s more than just that--it’s the effortlessly sexual way that she brushes her hair out of her face and grins at him from across the room, mouthing one moment over the buzz of the food processor. It’s how she sidles onto the couch and kicks the television remote off her footrest with bright red toenails and curls a hand around her fifth cup of tea of the day. It’s how she can blather on about literature while he watches the curve of her shoulders and the heave of her breasts and knows that he wants her.
“That doesn’t happen in ‘Grapes of Wrath,’” he says absentmindedly. “That’s from ‘East of Eden.’”
She pokes him. “Promise it does. Didn’t you read either of them in high school?”
I did, he thinks. Aron goes to meet Cathy in chapter fifty. “Nah. You know me. Wasn’t interested.”
“I can tell you all about it? It seems like your kind of story, Mike.”
Her eyes sparkle and she’s biting her lip excitedly, just like she always does before tilting up on her toes to kiss his best friend. “I’d love that.”
