Hi Sergey
I hope you understand english because I just felt for writing you some words.

I saw your review of the concert
http://uajazz.com/reports/08_stern/index.shtml

My name is Тор-Ивар Лунд and I was the soundproducer for Magma and Mike Stern in the Palace of Ukraine

As I see on livejournal, there are some discussions regarding the sound (my sound) in the concert hall.

First, thanks for giving me credit for a nice sound. :-)
You probably was seated on the mid-left side, or behind me. Where I sat it was not great, but it was ok.

But, I really do understand if people was not satisfied with the sound.
The sound and the sound-system was not good at all.
The speakers are old, the system is out of tune, and not even close to be the correct type of speaker-system to be used in that big concert hall!

I noticed already during testing of the system earlier on the day, that the speakersystem is no good, and especially
the right side. It is really out of tune and the crossovers (frequency filters) are set completely wrong!
However, I asked them to let me tune it, but they (the house technicians) would not let me.

I also noticed during soundcheck that there was a lot more boomy (bass) upfront and on the front-right side and up to the middle.
I tried to compensate a little for that, but maybe not enough and maybe this got even worse after people got into the hall.

But of course, if I had got up and walked through the hall in start of the concert, I would have noticed this and maybe could have corrected it somewhat.
In Norway, and other countries where the language is not a barrier, this is normally why we cooperate with the
house-technician(s). They are the people who knows (should know) the system and the concert hall, and should give tips regarding their hall and equipment.
Unfortunately, they did not seem especially interested in helping me we neither things!

And regarding the buzzing/distortion during the bass-solo, that was unfortunately an old delay effect that suddenly didnt work anymore.

Also, when people says it got better later out in the concert, I didnt change the sound at all, I just played a little louder, and that obviously
changed some of the boomy characteristics in the room.

One last thing, there are a lot of people who believes this band is a normal jazz-band and should have a normal jazz-sound.
That is not the intention, even with the music, or the musicians of this band.

This is not ment to be any kind of defence for myself, I could have done a much better job, yes,
but I just think it could be okey for you reporters to get my "view of it" also. :-)

We hope to be back in Ukraine next year, it's a nice country with a lot of great music-loving people.
And I also hope to get better sound-systems the next time. ;-)
Like in Donetsk and Odessa where it was good sound-systems and delivered by professional sound techs.
However, I also notice that you are critcal to what you hear, wich of course is very good, and that
means I'll have to concentrate even more to do a better job the next time.

Best regards
Тор-Ивар Лунд
