Best Way to Travel

Tomorrow I have to take one of my poor boys to an appointment. Normally this would not be a problem, but today was -10°F! (And with the wind chill, it was like -30F...) I do not have a car, so I have to walk and take public transportation ( Read more... )

heat a bag of rice in the microwave? Heated water is probably too heavy to carry :P

If I had a hot-water bottle, I would definitely bring one, but I don't have one. @_@ I did find a microwaveable heating pad filled with rice, though! (It's amazing the things that are hiding in this house...)

Put a thick bed of towels on the bottom of the carrier. Warm up the heating pad and wrap that in a towel too and put it to the back of the carrier. Put a thick layering of towel in front of the wire door at the front to block out the wind from scooting in from there.

Sandwich your piggie in between the wind block and the towel covering the heating pad at the back of the carrier. Enable enough room so your piggie can get away from directly touching the heating pad if it becomes too uncomfortable. Finally, place a towel over the top of the entire thing and then put the carrier roof on top. Alternativly, stuff the middle-area with hay if you've run out of towels. Insulating and yummy :)

That's what I'd do. The front towel will come away when the door opens so you can still get to your pig, or you could fix it so you have to dismantle the carrier to find your piggie.

I second this, along with filling the box with a fleece as well all scrunched up into a nest that he can sit inside. You could also pack fleece around the carrier within the bag.

Obviously you need to make sure he doesn't suffocate, I would definitely recommend getting a taxi cab as I wouldn't like to speculate on his chances without one :/ That is seriously cold for a piggie to try and withstand, even with all the precautions.

Wrap a small hot water bottle up in a blanket to place in with your pig. If you dont have a small one, only fill up a regular one half full, that way it wont be too heavy for you to carry.

Good luck, I'm sure he'll be fine!

Get a couple of packs of hand warmers and wrap them in towels. Make sure there are plenty of towels or blankets on the outside for insulation, but the hand warmers are usually rated for 8 hours or so, which is plenty of time to go and come back.

agree, hand warmers are very small and light and you can put several in there in various spots, just make sure they are covered in towels or something so piggy does not chew on them as I think they have yucky stuff inside them.

That and most work by absorbing oxygen. If they're left in the open, they'll heat up too much. Being put in a boot or glove helps limit how much they can get, which keeps them warm, not hot.

ask your vet for suggestions?

Of the top of my head, I would probably consider tucking him/ her inside my coat. Don't know if that would be a stupid idea or not.

I'm going too far to tuck him into my coat.

Suggestions. Taxi. Beg a ride from someone. But seriously call the vet.

Yeah, a taxi is a good idea. I don't have a car but I use a carshare (Zipcar) to take the piggies to the vet.

On the flip side, make sure he is able to get enough air to breath.

/hopes it isn't one instruction too many

I'm definitely worried about that and will be checking on him as much as I can without compromising his warmth. n_n
