As Archie stopped the car, Ruby was visibly tense as she looked out the window. He climbed out, coming around to open the door for her. He reached for her, helping her out of the vehicle, as her feet hit the ground, she inhaled deeply. He watched, fascinated as she inhaled deeply again.
“What are you doing?” he asked, tilting his head.
She blinked at him, “Breathing?”
He snorted, “No, Ruby, you’re…scenting…”
“My senses have been going crazy. I can smell like a bloodhound all of a sudden. That’s how I found David, that’s how I found the heart. I could smell it. Haven’t you noticed my sensitivity to light?”
Archie nodded, “Of course I noticed, but-“
“Run.”
He was taken back by her sudden command, “Excuse me?” he asked.
She looked at him, a mischievous grin appearing on her lips, “I’ll prove it to you. Run into the woods, hide, I will find you.”
The tone of her voice made him shiver, “Ruby, this is not what I had in mind…”
“I know, just do it.”
Unable to deny her, he found himself shakily making his way deep into the woods. Once he was sure he had gotten far enough away and was hidden well enough, he found himself winded. That’s when he heard her laughter. He looked up to see her leaning against the tree directly across from him. He gasped, startled, which made her giggle some more.
He saw a hungry look on her face, the word wolfish crossed his mind. She sashayed over to him, still grinning. He inhaled as she leaned up, sniffing him.
“You smell good,” she said, her voice was a husky moan.
Trying to keep his composure, he couldn’t help but ask, “What do I smell like?”
She chuckled; it was an arousing noise, “Male. Almost…earthy, like a summer night…”
“Should I take that as a compliment?” he asked, she ‘mmmhmmmed’ he shivered as he felt her breath on his neck. “Thank you.”
“No, Archie, thank you…I need to do something…I need to repay you…”
He swallowed hard as she dropped to her knees, locking her eyes with his as she unzipped his fly. “Ruby…I…we…can’t…” he whispered, but as he felt her hand on his awakening cock, he couldn’t help but jerk into her hand.
“But you want me,” she breathed against him, then slowly ran her tongue down the hardening shaft, down over the soft head.
He moaned softly, “Of course I do, Ruby, I’d have to be dead not to. But…ohh…please…we…can’t…” he lost his words again as Ruby’s mouth enveloped his cock, completely and smoothly. First his brain stopped and all he could do was sigh at the sensation, his legs swaying beneath him. But the conflict in him was almost as consuming as the feeling of her tongue and hot mouth. He brought his hands down, unable to think if it was to hold her there or push her away. As she slowly drew him into her mouth, almost into her throat, the radiating heat and wetness was too much. And to his surprise, and to hers, he let out a small sob. “I’m sorry.”
Ruby immediately stopped, pulling away, she tucked him back into his pants, throwing herself against him. “I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry,” she repeated. Having her this close wasn’t helping him and all he could think about was his guilt. “Archie, I’m so sorry, I don’t know what came over me.”
“Just go back to the car, please, I’m taking you home. I can’t…we have to go,” he said, more guilt fell upon him as she almost burst into tears.
He was silent on the way back, he couldn’t think of what to say. He was still torn, part of him, a very big part of him wanted to take her home and finish what she started. But his very strong moral side was telling him that it shouldn’t have happened, he should not have taken her out there, he just breached his oath and should quit his job. Instead he drove her to the Bed and Breakfast, keeping his eyes focused on the road ahead; he couldn’t even look at her as she tried to speak to him. She sighed, then climbed out, slamming the door and heading inside.
As Archie headed to his office, he found Henry Mills heading his way. He let the boy head up to his office first as he inhaled deeply, preparing himself. When he finally climbed up the narrow stairs and walked into his office, the boy was bouncing in his head.
“Why are you so grumpy?” Henry asked, Archie sighed as he sat down.
“It’s a long story, Henry, having to do with another patient. What has you so happy?” he asked in return.
The boy grinned, “Because! We have another person we might be able to add to Operation Cobra!”
“And who would that be?” he asked with a sigh, which caused Henry to glare at him.
“Little Red Riding Hood,” Henry’s words made him shiver.
Archie cleared his throat, “Who is she here?”
“Ruby, duh,” Henry said, “You know, for someone as smart as you, I can’t believe you didn’t figure it out.”
Dread filled the man for some reason, he certainly didn’t believe in the boy’s beliefs but…for some reason it felt so fitting with Ruby. Maybe it was because she completely embodied the woman, the character, whereas he could not see himself as Jiminy.
“Henry, would you mind cutting our session short? It’s not that I don’t want to talk to you or help you but right now my other patient needs me,” Archie said, to his surprised, the boy smiled.
“Yeah, just drop me off with Emma. It’s Ruby isn’t it, you want to tell her, don’t you?” his eyes were glittering with hope.
Archie couldn’t help himself, “Yes, I do.”
“Ok!” Henry said, grabbing his things, and they hurried back downstairs.
When Archie arrived at the Bed and Breakfast, the door was locked. It was never locked, especially given it was for guests to come and go as they pleased. When he realized there would be no answer, he went home and called. No answer. So he continued to call every ten minutes until the evening when Granny answered.
“Doctor Hopper, why do you keep calling?” she asked.
He cleared his throat, “Have you talked to your Granddaughter today?”
There was a pause, “She told me that she doesn’t want to talk to you. I don’t know what you could have possibly done to piss her off but good job, usually she’s only this mad at me,” the widow laughed.
“It was a misunderstanding, I do need to speak to her,” He said.
“Sorry, but that won’t be happening tonight, try again tomorrow,” The old woman said, voice filled with sympathy.
Archie sighed, “Yes, of course, thank you Granny,” he said, “Good night.”
“Good night, Archie.”
The line went dead and he hung up the phone. He looked to Pongo, who seemed to be glaring at him. He climbed to his feet, heading into his room. The next thing he knew, the phone was ringing, and the day had gone dark. He glanced at the clock, which read 2:45am.
“Hello?” he asked, brain still foggy from sleep.
“Archie?” It was Granny, “Ruby’s gone.”
That immediately woke him up, “What?”
“I went to check on her a few minutes ago, she’s gone. Her car is still here but she’s nowhere. August came in saying he thought he saw her walking out of town,” the woman said.
“I think I know where she’s going, I’ll find her, I promise,” he assured her.
As fast as he could, he dressed and found himself back out into the woods. He wandered for what felt like hours, finding nothing. He tripped a few times, hitting his knees hard but it didn’t deter him, and he continued to look. The crickets’ song filled the air, it was the only thing keeping him calm. Suddenly out of the darkness, he heard a calm, sad voice.
“I’m over here, Archie.”
He rushed towards the voice, finding Ruby sitting in a clearing. Her eyes were turned up at the sky, watching the moon and the stars. She was shoeless, sitting in her pajamas, looking tired but calm. With a sigh, he sat down beside her and she looked at him with a thin smile. “I’ve been sitting here hours, trying to figure out what to do…and I noticed, there’s like three different cricket songs,” she stated.
“Actually there are four,” he informed her, glancing over at her, and her smile brightened.
She was peering at him curiously, “What are they?”
He smiled, “Well, one is the calling song, it attracts females and repels males, it’s fairly loud. The courting song is used when a female is near, it’s a quiet song. There’s an aggressive song when another male is near and then there’s copulatory song which is produced for a brief time after a successful mating.”
Ruby giggled, “Well then there are a lot of crickets getting lucky tonight.”
He chuckled softly, “How are you?”
“I’m ok. I’m no longer freaking out, I feel better. I think the moon is making me crazy, but this is the last night of the full moon,” she said, then swallowed, “I’m sorry about earlier. I should not have pushed you, I have no idea what came over me. I guess that little game…kinda…turned me on and I couldn’t control myself. I was wrong, I’m sorry.”
“Your apology is accepted, but I do apologize as well, I should not have shut down and given you the cold shoulder,” he said, she nodded.
Ruby leaned over, placing her chin on his shoulder, “Apology accepted. But Archie, there’s something I want to say and please don’t be offended,” she began, he nodded for her to continue. Instead she moved, scooting so she was sitting in front of him. She locked eyes with him and drew a breath, “I know you technically broke a law by even letting me do that to you, but…even if we had just been running around in the woods just us, you’d still be torn. You’re a shrink, that’s all you are, I’ve known you for years and you don’t have much of a personal life. This is all you are. If I was your girlfriend, you’d still instinctively shrink me no matter what.”
Archie took in her words, knowing she was right, “You are correct. I really don’t have a personal life do I? And even if…we…were a-a-a…couple,” he felt himself blush at the thought, “I would, I don’t think I can separate myself from my job.”
Ruby nodded, “I know, but I don’t fault you for that, I know you just want to help. We need to be adults and realize that I can’t see you in a professional manner, given I don’t know how to behave.” She winked at him.
“I agree, your temptation is too strong,” he admitting, face burning, she giggled, “But I will always want to help you and I can’t promise not to “shrink” your behavior,” he told her.
“Well then, Archie, know what I want you to do?” she asked, her tongue trailing along her bottom lip.
He smirked, “I think I have an idea.”
“Run.” She told him.
And he did.
