The
scream hadn't died away before Rose started running back towards the entrance to the cave. She couldn't see Dimitri anymore. Her mother and Alberta had just dragged Ms. Carmack into the open, and at least five Strigoi were crowding at the entrance, just waiting for the sun to go down.
She couldn't understand why Stan was holding onto her, why wasn't he letting her go? Rose fought him with all her strength, trying desperately to get free. Didn't he know she had to go? Dimitri needed her.
Janine skidded to a halt, easily ripping her daughter away from the other guardian's hold and shaking her. "Rose! We have to get out of here!" She knew in her heart what had already happened, and death in combat was never easy, but Rose had to accept this to be a guardian.
"He's in there!" she screamed hysterically, fighting the grasp. She had been killing Strigoi earlier but she couldn't get away from her mother? "Dimitri's We have to go back for him! We can't just leave him there!"
Oh God, Dimitri was in there. Dimitri who'd never faltered had been pulled down, and he was still in the caves.
"He is dead, Rose!" Janine yelled, fear surging in her for the first time. "We can't go back in there. The sun will be down in fifteen minutes, and they are waiting for us. We're going to be in the dark before we can get back to the wards. We need every second we can get - it still may not be enough."
Rose couldn't answer. The Strigoi were gathering at the cave entrance, and she knew her mother was right. They were faster than the guardians, and every minute was going to count in the five mile rush back to the wards. But she couldn't move, he couldn't take a step. If Dimitri was dead, then half her soul was gone. If he was dead, she might as well be too.
Janine Hathaway had more molnija marks than almost any guardian of her age. Her calm in battle situations was legendary, but the sight of her daughter standing there with a death wish sent her into a panic. She slapped Rose across the face, hard enough to bruise later. "Run! He is dead and I will not let you join him."
Rose stumbled back at the blow, tears pouring down her face as she saw her mother's fear. Dimitri would never want her to die stupidly, killed by the Strigoi because she couldn't make herself move. Standing here now, she would just fail both of them.
She turned and ran away from the caves, away from the Strigoi, away from Dimitri.
