I was shocked when I read that as Guildford, part of Surrey, British Columbia, thinking "How could I have not heard about that?!?!?"
I can't imagine something like that happening in public. I know that it's often thought best to keep your eyes on your own plate, let others do their thing, whatever, but I don't want to live in that kind of a world. I keep an eye out in public, I check in to make sure that a stray kid has a grown-up nearby, and I ask if I see someone crying or in distress. It's part of my duty as a member of the community, a community that I want to be caring, concerned, involved. I might live in a city, but I want that city to be a community that fosters the best, not just an anonymous cesspool to mediocrity and disinterest.
