Congrats and I must suggest something to you: Get into the school that YOU want to go to. Do not go for your friends because friends can be made easily -- especially for you.

If you go to Maryland, you will not be able to get on-campus housing. The dorms are overcrowded with freshmen, who aren't even guaranteed first year housing anymore. You'd have to live in a house off campus or rent from the ridiculously expensive apartment complexes in the area (the View, University Towers, etc).

Do what's best for you. By the time UMD gets your situation settled, it'll probably be too late to even find housing close by, and I know you don't want to live at home and commute.

Yeah definitely choose a school that would serve in your best interest because its crazy to pick a school based on the location of your friends. Besides, your real friends would stay your friends regardless of where you go to school. As lame as this sounds when I was deciding schools I wrote one of those pros/cons lists for every school, it seemed to help a lot.
