Cambridge seeks to defray federal tax on health care:

In a move that may be the first of its kind in the country, Cambridge will soon begin making payments to same-sex married public employees to defray the cost of what local officials have called a discriminatory federal tax.

Google did something similar to that about a year ago.

Yes, they did; it was mentioned in the article. But it's a bit different in the sense that Google is a company and Cambridge is a city.

It seems like the right thing to do, to really provide equitable benefits, but it certainly comes across as special treatment, and is easily spun.
