Every time I hear about one of these I just get sick. How many kids are going to have to die before parents start teaching their kids how not to be notorious little assholes?
Quantity isn't the problem here. Parents who teach their children to be assholes don't give a shit how many people die because of their actions. It won't be until *their* child dies that they'll *possibly* see the error of their ways.
I know this is going to sound like a crazy idea, but I'm worried that all the media coverage we're giving to teen suicide (connected with bullying) might be counter-productive. I wonder if some young teens think that suicide would be an attractive option because of all the fame, attention and sympathy they'll get after they're dead. For some teens, there's something appealing about the idea of suicide -- the high drama of it. Mix that with (a) some bullying, (b) certain youth sub-cultures that celebrate "darkness", (c) the promise of instant celebrity, and (d) probably underlying depression, and you can see the result
( ... )
Personally, that would have been a turn off. One of the main things that keeps me from killing myself is the thought that people will read my writings and continue to judge me even after I die. I don't know, that just seems like a ridiculous notion, the thought that kids kill themselves to be a celebrity...they're DEAD, it's not like they can possibly enjoy the fame!
I think a lot of the ideas you espouse are crazy (I say that with love), but I don't think that one is. The same thought has crossed my mind. Not only that, but it can put the idea in a kid's head. I'm not saying they're going to kill themselves because of something they heard on the news, but it may not be an option (if you can call it that) that has occurred to them.

It isn't rational, but suicide rarely (if ever) is.
