Vatican: female priests akin to pedophilia

Jul 21, 2010 18:18

The Vatican is backtracking somewhat, but it has announced new rules making it easier to discipline priests. Heresy, schism, pedophilia, and ordaining women as priests are seen as "grave sins."While not directly related to LGBT issues, since homosexuality is so often lumped together with pedophilia by the Vatican, I thought it was relevant. I imagine that the Vatican will eventually catch up with modern attitudes towards women and the diversity of human sexuality. Sometime around the year 2500, maybe.

Although I suppose ordaning women would be heresy or schism. Which is why it's in the list.

And, of course, it should not be surprising to anyone that heresy and schism are listed as "grave sins" in the Catholic Church. It's probably a testament to the pressure being put on the Vatican that paedophilia is.

Yeah, it seems like PR. "See, we're opposed to pedophilia too! Just forget how much we've ignored and protected officials who have abused children for decades, across the world."

How many nuns - or female ministers in other denominations - have been accused of pedophilia?

i am not sure what you are trying to get at with this question -- perhaps an honest attempt at seeing if anyone knows statistics? -- and i do just want to point out, perhaps unnecessarily, that female-identified people, including nuns and female ministers, have certainly chosen to commit sexual violence.

Certainly... but outside of pedophilia, the vast majority of rapes are committed by men. I don't know the stats on pedophilia, but as it comes under the umbrella of rape I imagine it's similar. (I'll look it up when I get to the office.)

(I should specify male-identified men... nobody's done stats on transgender sexual violence yet, I don't think.)

Well, in some countries, such as the UK, all rape cases are perpetrated by men. Of course, that's because of how "rape" is defined.

It varies from state to state in the US, too. I'm sure some are like that... I know others only specify "penetration," but not with what. In Alabama, it's "carnal knowledge without consent," whatever that means.
