Having seen every episode of The Golden Girls multiple times (because my boyfriend is an insane megafan), it's incredible just how much they were talking about gay acceptance and marriage equality in the late 80s and early 90s (not just in this episode, but several others), at a time when a large majority was still opposed to gay rights in general.

It should probably be mentioned that this episode, "Sister of the Bride", was co-written by Marc Cherry, who went on to create Desperate Housewives.

Yeah it wasn't lost on me that the Golden Girls were progressive on this issue back in the flipping 80s.
