We're making progress in our bid to take over the world.

In California, an openly gay Latino has been selected as the Speaker of the Assembly, and is the first openly gay person to lead a state legislature.

I agree. Identity politics can be potentially dangerous, and shouldn't be something anyone bases their vote on.

That said, I still think having more and more openly gay, lesbian, bisexual, or trans politicians is a good thing (so long as they aren't corrupt bastards or incompetent, as politicians tend to be).

Celebrating that Houston is willing to elect an openly gay mayor is not the same thing as saying someone should vote for a candidate for the sole reason that they are gay.

Former Minnesota Senate President Allan Spear was the first openly gay official to lead a state legislature, said a spokesman for the Victory Fund, a group that supports gay and lesbian candidates. This article incorrectly said John Perez, the presumptive speaker of the California Assembly, would be the first person to hold the distinction.
