Is it wrong that my first thought was "Since when does the government fund gay photography? I thought that was dismantled after the Maplethorpe/NEA debacle..."
In all seriousness, the punishment wouldn't bother me nearly as much if it sounded like the guy was at all sorry. He's not. He would do it again. That's not okay.
It's ludicrous, of course. I'm all for educators trying to be provocative to stir thought and discussion, but I have a hard time thinking this has any academic value.
Just goes to show you how unions protect even bullshit like this.
To me, the fact that he'd think that it was okay to say this to any class raises serious doubts about his ability to be a good teacher. I think he deserved stronger disciplinary action - I don't think they should have fired him right off or anything, but there should have been a long, in-depth meeting for whoever's responsible for hiring and firing there.
That's how I feel. What he said was unbelievably stupid and offensive, but if this is the first serious issue with this guy after a 22-year career, then I don't think it's a firable offense. Strong disciplinary action and a notice that they won't be so forgiving next time are more appropriate.
If it does turn out this guy has a history of saying outrageous and offensive things in the classroom, however, I'm willing to revisit my opinion, however.

"His intention was to teach"...Sorry, can't believe it.
He's an educator and should know better than using inappropriate language in classes.

I agree, he should know better than to use hatespeech in class.
