Gay ‘cure’ still sought by some therapists

Mar 25, 2009 20:33

A new study out of the UK has found that 1/6 of therapists try to "cure" their homosexual patients, by turning them heterosexual. And there may be under reporting, since it isn't mainstream.

If 17% of British therapists admit to it, I wonder how many do in the U.S.

absurd, causes of homosexuality, uk, mental health

It probably depends on the region of the U.S.

None because it's against their ethical code. Reparative therapy for transsexuals is still accepted, though.

I'm saddened and ashamed that this kind of stupidity also exists in Britain.

Depends on what they count as therapists. I bet it's higher among people trained in "pastoral therapy."

I agree. My mom's pastor is a licensed therapist (well, some sort of license and he does offer "counseling") and I imagine he would try reparative therapy. So yeah, it sounds bad, but might not be that bad. I'm sure the numbers among mainstream, secular therapists would be much lower. At least, I hope so.
