Study: Teens Who Pledge Abstinence More Likely to Have Unprotected Sex

A new federal study of 934 high school-age students has found that those who take pledges of abstinence tend to not use condoms or birth control when having sex:

Well duh. Anyone with half a brain could tell you that.

Also, those who have taken virginity pledges are 3x more likely to have oral sex and EIGHT TIMES more likely to have anal sex.

Well, there are intelligent people who support abstinence programs, but I can't think of any realistic reason to only support abstinence "education."

That was my personal favourite stat for a few years. Especially as the kids in my high school were taking pledges left and right and talking about how disgusting gay people were.

I am all about comprehensive sex ed with abstience as an option, but pushing it and making it the only option is something that will just cause issues in the long term. People have sex, period, with or without the school's financially supported bias. (As abst only programs are hte only ones that get funding ( ... )

Right. I don't think anyone says that abstinence is the only sure way to not get pregnant or contract an STD, but that doesn't mean it's the only thing that should be taught. It's absurd.
