Tagging policy
As most members know, this community has encouraged the tagging of posts for quite some time. It always warms my heart when I see a post adequately (but not excessively) tagged. Many of you do a great job with this. As long-time members may recall, this policy was instituted at the urge of members, and makes it easier to navigate old posts.
Unfortunately, many people do not tag their posts, which turns me into a nag and means that I have to do it. Now, it may only take 15 seconds per post, but compound that with a couple of posts a day, and over a year's time, and I'm spending way too much time tagging others' posts.
First thing you should know: you can't create your own tags, and have to use pre-established tags. This is so we don't get bogged down in excessive, obscure, or redundant tags. But it also means that you think you've tagged your post, but you really haven't because what you used aren't existing tags.
Every so often, I go through and clean up the tags, parsing them down. Likewise, the other mods or I will add an appropriate tag if the need arises or a member suggests something. Obviously, some tags are more common than others. Our current list of established tags can be found here. This list is your friend.
If you put in a tag that hasn't already been created, it won't go through. Having a working knowledge of this list is good.
Secondly: How to tag? I realize that we get new members or people new to LJ who aren't used to tagging. It's very simple, and there are two ways to do it.
If you know what tags you want to use when making your post, just type them in the proper field:
If you've made your post but aren't positive the exact tags you want to use, or edit them later, that's easy, too:
Just click on the tag button.
Once you've done that, you'll see this screen:
Note the list of tags. You can manually type in what you want, or hold the ctrl button and highlight each tag.
Easy, right?
